3 Prominent Voices in the Autism Community

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can sometimes mean that an individual's ability to communicate can be limited. Because of this, those with loved ones affected by autism spectrum disorder must learn to be the voice for their loved ones, helping them to navigate a world that can sometimes work against them.
According to the World Health Organization, around 1 out of every 160 children globally have some form of autism spectrum disorder, which often begins in childhood and impacts a person throughout the entirety of their life. Luckily, interventions such as behavior treatment, parent training, (SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL, FLOORTIME THERAPHIES) and access to life-long care can positively increase the quality of life for those affected by ASD.
However, one of the largest challenges that face families and individuals living with ASD is the myths and misconceptions that are tied to the disorder. For many, this negative stigma can be difficult to navigate, and even harder to explain to others who are misinformed about why an individual with ASD may have difficulty in social situations.
Thankfully, there are many people who have taken it upon themselves to be a voice for those who may not be able to express their feelings. These prominent voices in the autism community are making waves globally, sharing real-life experiences, challenges, and encounters to share information and cultivate a culture of understanding around ASD. The following blogs and voices are just a few examples of people making a massive difference in the autism community and beyond:
1 - Jon Stewart

As the host of the “Night of Too Many Stars” fundraiser, Jon Stewart has brought autism awareness into the mainstream and into Hollywood. With a range of comedians performing roasts and skits at the fundraiser that has raised over $18 million, Stewart is an active and powerful voice for the autism community in North America.
2 -  Jim Walter

As the main writer of Just a Lil Blog, Jim Walter records and shares daily instances and experiences of his daughter on the autistic spectrum. Mixing humor with the daily challenges that Lily and her loved one’s face, Jim is able to share his experiences, knowledge, and thoughts on how Lily’s autism affects her daily lifestyle. Lily and her family live in Pennsylvania, an American state known for its supportive stance for individuals with autism.
On Just a Lil Blog’s History page, Jim says, “Lily is happy, and Lily is loved, and our goal as Lily's parents, just like every parent's goal for his child, is to help her be the best she can be, whatever form that might take.” And this take is what keeps parents, siblings, and loved ones coming back to follow along with Lily’s journey.
3 - Eileen Shaklee

On the blog Autism with a Side of Fries, Eileen takes a humorous approach to explaining her experiences with her son on the autism spectrum. You can feel her undeniable love for her son in every word she writes as she chooses to always see the bright side of her experiences.

For families, caretakers, and loved ones of people living with autism, it’s easy to think the world is working against you at times. However, with the help of these prominent voices, stigmas are being challenged, and autism spectrum disorder is becoming increasingly understood around the world.
